According to the United States Department of Justice, the number of people filing for bankruptcy is steadily rising, despite a slight improvement in the numbers in 2006. While this chart shows the fluctuation of numbers from year to year, we can see that the numbers are growing steadily. In just three years, the number of Washington residents increased over 165%, or from 11,911 in 2006 to 31,536 in 2009. The numbers are now back to where they were during the economic turmoil of 2005.
